SYMPTOMS OF CEREBRAL PALSY
The following are the most common Cerebral Palsy symptoms. However, each child may experience symptoms differently. The child with CP may have muscle weakness, poor motor control, or muscle tightness, also called spasticity, of the arms or legs. Muscle stiffness in the form of stiff legs or clenched fists may also be seen. Cerebral Palsy symptom classification are grouped according to the kind of motor function the child may have, including the following:
- spastic diplegia ("di" - means two) - spastic movements of the arms or legs. Diplegia is also called paraplegia.
spastic quadriplegia ("quad" means four) - spastic movements in all four limbs (arms and legs).
spastic hemiplegia ("hemi" means half) - spasticity affecting one half, or side, of the body (such as right arm and right leg).
spastic hemiplegia - spasticity in both sides of the body, but the amount of shaking is different when comparing the right side to the left side.
athetoid - involuntary (unable to control), purposeless,rigid movement, uncontrolled, slow, writhing movements
- ataxic cerebral palsy -often have low muscle tone, very poor balance, poor coordination; walk unsteadily with a wide-based gait, placing their feet unusually far apart; and experience difficulty when attempting quick or precise movements
Early signs or symptoms of cerebral palsy usually appear before 3 years of age, and parents are often the first to suspect that their infant is not developing motor skills normally. Infants with cerebral palsy are frequently slow to reach developmental milestones, such as learning to roll over, sit, crawl, smile, or walk. This is sometimes called a developmental delay. Some children with cerebral palsy have abnormal muscle tone. Decreased muscle tone is called hypotonia; the baby may seem flaccid and relaxed, even floppy. Increased muscle tone is called hypertonia, and the baby may seem stiff or rigid. In some cases, the baby has an early period of hypotonia that progresses to hypertonia after the first 2 to 3 months of life. Affected children may also have unusual posture or favor one side of their body. Parents who are concerned about their baby's development for any reason should contact their physician, who can help distinguish normal variation in development from a developmental disorder.

Question: What are the most common causes of cerebral palsy?
Answer: During the birth, many times the child’s ability to obtain needed oxygen is a chief cause of cerebral palsy. It may result from premature separation of the placenta, too large of baby for the birth canal or pelvis, too long or too abrupt of labor, awkward and/or breech deliveries, cord entanglement, excessive Pitocin, shoulder dystocia, failure to order timely cesarean (c-section), placenta abruptus, excessive force or use of vacuum or forceps, and ruptured uterus. In additional cerebral palsy may occur when there is presence of birth asphyxia, a vaginal birth after a caesarean delivery (VBAC) with a ruptured uterus, neonatal depression, static encephalopathy, fetal bleeding, periventricular leukomalacia, fetal distress during labor, an abrupted placenta and/or hypoxic ischemic encephalopathy,
Question: What are the early signs that may indicate a birth injury or birth trauma may have occurred ?
Answer: Early signs of cerebral palsy may include but limited to low apgar scores, child born with low ph or acidosis, a child born with a bluish skin tone, seizure immediately after birth, cerebral edema, difficulty breathing on its own and a child born severely bruised at birth. These signs may show evidence of a forced delivery or excessive force or trauma on the infant during birth.
Question: What are the physical signs or common symptoms that indicate that a child may have cerebral palsy ?
Answer: A child with cerebral palsy may have limbs that are hard to move or stiff, underdeveloped limbs, muscular hypertonicity, muscle weakness and a tendency to contractures. Cerebral Palsy (CP) child may also exhibit involuntary or uncontrolled movements ,weakness, incoordination, wide-based gait, imbalance and difficulty in depth perception.
