Does hypoxic-ischemic encephalopathy cause cerebral palsy?
Hypoxic-ischemic encephalopathy or HIE, is the severe brain injury caused by the lack of oxygen or oxygen deprivation to the brain of the baby, also called intrapartum asphyxia. This lack of oxygen to the baby's brain during this fetal stress event can cause brain damage due to the extended oxygen deprivation. Most babies can tolerate short period of stress or lack of oxygen without any major problems but protracted lack of oxygen can be devastating to the baby's survival and its brain cells. Hypoxic-ischemic encephalopathy or short version Hypoxc-ischem enceph or ICD 9 768.70, often referred to birth hypoxic-ischemic encephalopathy, neonatal hypoxic ischemic encephalopathy and/or perinatal anoxic-ischemic brain injury can lead to the infant's sudden death or a life long brain injury / cerebral palsy to the surviving baby.
Extended Oxygen Deprivation Can Cause Cerbral Palsy
All medical and cerebral palsy experts agree that oxygen deprivation to the baby before or during birth can lead to and cause cerebral palsy. When brain damage from hypoxic-ischemic encephalopathy occurs, it often results in severe impairments both mental and physical that become more apparent as the child ages. As the child born with hypoxic-ischemic encephalopathy gets older, the levels (mild, moderate, and severe) or types of hypoxic-ischemic encephalopathy become more defined.
Though oxygen deprivation at birth is a significant cause of cerebral palsy, it is by means not the leading cause of cerebral palsy to babies. Other major factors include lack of nutrients or oxygen during gestation, infections, premature births, traumatic birth and many more.
