SPASTIC DIPLEGIA - CEREBRAL PALSY

Spastic diplegia is a type of spastic cerebral palsy in which a patient has difficulty moving or controlling both legs or both arms. Spastic diplegia is often called spastic paraplegia or Little's disease. The legs are often more affected than the upper extremities. Spastic means stiff or contracted. The word Diplegia breaks down into "di," meaning two, and "plegia," the Latin word for weakness. Therefore, spastic diplegia means stiff or contracted muscles affecting two extremities causing weakness.It is believed prematurity may be a factor in the large numbers of spastic diplegia CP patients. Spastic diplegia is almost always due to antepartum events, the latter occurring almost exclusively in preterm babies. Infants born very prematurely or with low birth weight are at higher risk for Spastic Diplegia CP, compared to term or near-term infants. Among the very preterm and very low birth weight (VLBW) children, spastic diplegia is the most prevalent subtype of cerebral palsy. In medical studies, it has been concluded that infants born premature and with white matter damage caused by maternal infection during pregnancy,often are diagnosed with spastic diplegia.
